New Services — Pet Portals, Wisdom Panel

photoIntroducing Pet Portals!

Pet Portals are private websites that give you secure online access to your pet's health information. We provide Pet Portals free of charge to all clients who have an active email address.

How Can I get a Pet Portal? Just give us your email address and you will receive a password by email. To get your Pet Portal simply:

  • Visit our website and click the Pet Portals login button. Just follow the instructions you'll find under the "Want a Pet Portal?" header.
  • Give us your email address when you visit the hospital.
  • Give us your email address when you next speak with us on the telephone.

How do I access my Pet Portal? Visit our website at www.circleoflifeawc.com and enter your email address and password in the Pet Portal login box. You can bookmark the login page, but not your Pet Portal since it is a secure site.

What do you do with my email address? We use your email address as your Pet Portal sign-in name. You have the option of receiving your pet's service reminders by email. We use email to contact clients about important practice and animal health news. We will never misuse your email address and will NEVER share it with another party.

What else can I do with a Pet Portal? You can set up medication reminders with the Medication Minder feature. This can help you remember to give monthly medication such as Interceptor. You can print out your pet's vaccination status if you need it for the boarding kennel or groomer. You can use PetNotes to create and print out health care information for pet sitters or the kennel staff when you are out of town. You can notify us of changes of address, request appointments and medication refills online.

We are very excited about this new service, so don't delay — start managing your pet's care with your Pet Portal today!

What's in the Mix?

Your dog is your best friend and companion. You think everything about your mixed breed dog is great — what they look like, silly things they do, how they play! Wouldn't it be amazing if you knew the breeds in their ancestry?

Introducing Wisdom Panel™ MX Mixed Breed Analysis, the most comprehensive DNA-based mixed breed test for dogs. It detects 134 AKC-recognized breeds that may be present in mixed breed dogs and will allow veterinarians to answer one of the most frequently asked questions by pet owners, "What is my dog's breed mix?"

This is a quick and easy test requiring only a small amount of your dog's blood. Results are usually available in 2-3 weeks. Dr. Best recently tested her mixed breed dogs and was thrilled with the results! She was fairly certain that Sage is a cross between an Australian Cattle Dog and Shetland Sheepdog. The test confirmed this! Emmy's ancestry was completely unknown and had been speculated for many years! It turns out that she is part Great Pyrenees, part Border Collie and part Shetland Sheepdog, with a few other breeds thrown in for good measure!

If you are interested in this test, give us a call!! We have the test kits available right now!

What's New with Our Staff?

In May Dr. Best attended a seminar in Wisconsin on Canine Reproduction. The focus of the seminar was on collecting and freezing semen. This is a service that Dr. Best feels is important to offer to the breeders of this area, in addition to our other reproductive services.

Dr. Best intends to have the new "Freezing Lab" up and running by the end of June. If you have a stud dog and would like to volunteer his services as a "guinea pig", please call the office. We may get some good collections and you may have a chance to store some of his semen! This will give Dr. Best some practice collections and freezings before we start offering this service full time.

We are sad to announce that Brittney left us at the end of June. Her husband was transferred out of the area with his job. We had just gotten Brittney "broken in" to our quirky ways and amazingly, she fit right in! We will miss her, but wish her and her family all the best!

We have two new kennel attendants on board. Both Lindsey and Brenda are sharing evening and weekend kennel duty. We are thrilled to have such kind, compassionate and capable individuals caring for our patients and boarders. You can rest assured, if your pets board with us, they will be treated as part of our Circle of Life family!

  SUMMER WELLNESS TIPS

Heartworms and Intestinal Parasites

We have recently conducted an internal review of all heartworm and intestinal parasite products to ensure that our hospital offers the best medicine to our clients. After a close comparison of the major products available, our veterinarians have decided to recommend INTERCEPTOR (milbemycin oxime) Flavor Tabs for the prevention of heartworm disease and intestinal parasites. Our decision was based on:

  • INTERCEPTOR Flavor Tabs are a proven product, used worldwide for more than 17 years.
  • It has shown 100% efficacy against heartworms and also protects your pet against hookworms, roundworms and whipworms.
  • INTERCEPTOR Flavor Tabs contain milbemycin oxime, the active ingredient most veterinarians trust for their own pets.

Preventing parasites is important in keeping your pet healthy, as well as helping to reduce your family's risk from zoonotic diseases. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) works to raise awareness of the fact that human parasitic infestations are much more common than one would think. In addition, the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends that all pets should be given a monthly broad-spectrum parasite prevention product. Both hookworms and roundworms are potentially contagious to humans. A vast majority of human infections are in children. INTERCEPTOR Flavor Tabs is our choice and recommendation for preventing heartworm and internal parasites.

As veterinarians, it is our professional responsibility to provide your pet with what we believe is the best and safest treatment for the prevention of internal parasites. Our recommendation reflects our beliefs of "care without compromise". As a responsible and loving pet owner, we know you want the best for your pet. Together, we can ensure the health of your pet.

We do require a current heartworm test (within two years) prior to prescribing INTERCEPTOR Flavor Tabs. Please call our office to schedule your dog's heartworm test or pick up your INTERCEPTOR Prescription today!

  FEATURED CASE

Non-traditional Skin Tumor Treatment

Both Cody and Jack had inoperable skin tumors. Cody's was on her elbow and was the size of a large plum. Jack's was on his carpus (wrist) and was the size of a walnut. Both tumors had started to cause problems; from pain and swelling to oozing and becoming infected. With few surgical options available — incomplete removal of the tumor and quick re-growth or amputation of the leg — both Cody and Jack's owners opted for an alternative treatment with Dr. Allbright.

This treatment used a topical bloodroot extract known as Neoplasene. The product was applied to the tumor and over time the cancerous tissue died and sloughed off, leaving a healthy area of scar tissue. The course of treatment was about 4-6 weeks. Both dogs seemed to tolerate the treatment well with very few side effects. They appear to be cancer-free at this point and the owners are thrilled, especially considering the grim outlook of their pets' diseases at the beginning. If your are interested in this or other alternative treatments, please schedule a consultation with Dr. Allbright.
